Setting
The film WALL-E, was set in two locations, one showing a dystopian future of what may happen to the Earth if humans do not sustain and care for the Earth’s future. The other is set in space where a ship allows humans wealthy enough to escape the Earth and live on it. The ships name, the Axiom, is used in logic and math to describe something unquestionable or taken for granted. The Axiom is presented as a highly developed place that satisfies plenty of human wants and needs. It has incredibly advanced technology with plenty of bright lights and impressive robots which do all the chores for humans. On board the Axiom humans do not do any work, they do not even walk for the themselves. The Axiom is presented as a place of heaven in sky above.

In the film the setting is used to warn us that we could destroy our Earth if we do not look after it. Earth is in a terrible condition. Literally mountains of rubbish have piled up and the only sign of non-robotic life is a cockroach, named Hal. When humans first abandoned the Earth millions of tiny robots, called WALL-E unites, were left behind to pile the rubbish up humans have left behind. This was meant to make life sustainable again. However, Earth being heavily trashed and destroyed, it is unable to sustain life meaning that humans can not return. Generations have passed where human lifestyle has changed and evolved. Because of the technology in the Axiom humans have become more overweight and no longer have face to face interaction. Earth is now a forgotten land of where humans used to live and Axiom has become a technologically advanced heaven. Earth is now a historic place that few remember. WALL-E reintroduces the problem of Earth sustainability and how its falling apart, representing the catastrophic future if Earth is not looked after properly.
The two setting do have one thing in common though, they are, or were, both controlled by the transnational company Buy N Large (BNL). BNL is responsible for the Earth becoming a junk yard so it is ironic that the Axiom is still controlled by BNL. The buy in large logo is seen everywhere throughout the film, it is even the owner of the newspaper above (Buy N Large Times). It is a major part of the setting and is meant to comment on globalisation and the damaging impact that large companies, like apple and nike, can have on the world. In fact within the film numerous references to Apple are made; when WALL-E is fully charged by the sun, he makes the same "boot up" sound that most of Apple's Macintosh make, WALL-E watches his favourite movie every night on the screen of an iPod, Auto's voice is provided by Apple's text-to-speech system and MacinTalk -EVE's sleek design as an evolution of WALL-E's parallels the sleek iMac design having evolved from the boxy, beige Apple IIe.
In the film there is one scene where WALL-E and EVE are dancing in space. The setting of space is used to show their freedom. Like bird they can fly and go where ever they want as they are not tied to the lifestyle of the Axion or Earth. Eventually they return to the Axion and save everyone.
Overall the setting of space represent the future.
