There is one main film that goes hand in hand with WALL-E and that is Short Circuit!
Short Circuit (1986) is an American comic science fiction. It's plot is centred around and experimental military robot which is struck by lightning and gains humanlike intelligence, it then journeys to explore a new state.
It has been argued by many that WALL-E is a direct rip off of Short Circuit, and yes the two films are incredibly similar as they are both based around the same lines, a robot becoming human. This makes them very interesting to be compared in class and very easy to create an essay topic out of.

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) is a film where one the main antagonist is a computer system called HAL 9000. The film is set on board a space ship, heading for Jupiter, in search for extra-terrestrial life. The ship is controlled completely by HAL, much like the main antagonist Auto in WALL-E. In the film HAL attempts to murder the two astronauts on board the ship to cover up his own mistake and prevent them from shutting him down. Auto’s red eye is a direct reference to HAL. Like WALL-E the film explores the theme of man being replaced and controlled by machines.
Silent Running (1972) is an American environmentally-themed movie which stars Bruce Dern, Cliff Potts, Ron Rifkin and Jesse Vint. It depicts the future where all the plants on the Earth are extinct however, there are a few specimens in large greenhouse domes, outside of the orbit of Saturn. the plan is to reforest Earth, however orders are commanded to destroy the greenhouse domes. It is up to the botanists to protect the green houses. This film is similar to the film WALL-E as it includes the environmental factor and the botanists representing Captain B. McCrea’s enthusiastic approach to saving the Earth and replanting it with plants. It also depicts the idea of Earth being destroyed in the future that humans have to come up with other ideas to survive.
